Chapter 11

Workplace Bullying Clubs and Associations (Volunteer workplace bullying)

Workplaces are supposed to be a team environment where everyone works together for the common goal. As is seen more and more in today’s society in all work areas, there are those who just simply do not belong or want to belong in the team environment. Workplace bullying is carried out by those who think they are better than the rest of us, or are frustrated in their position and need to vent, or by those who are lacking in the skills and are “fearful” that their secret will be discovered, so cover it up by making others (the victims) look bad instead.

By the time the schoolyard bully gets into the workforce, they have to learn a whole new range of skills to add to their growing list of tools in order for them to continue their “power” games. Some come across as a more formidable opponent and decide it is not worth the hassle, others step on everyone to climb the corporate ladder. It all depends on their education in the schoolyard and how sturdy their nerves are as to whether they will succeed and further their bullying career or fail and have others bully them.

Bullying in the workplace can incorporate any of the following behaviours - degrading, humiliating, insulting, physical, sexual, discriminating, interfering with your work, causing you to make mistakes, showing you up as being a bad employee when you are not, threatening, abusive, scandalous (vicious rumours), basically any behaviour that the victim feels is harmful to them and threatens their position in that job. Even though workplace laws or policies may suggest otherwise, remember, any form/level/style of bullying that is “harmful, menacing, intimidating, or the like is classed as a criminal offence and is punishable by law.

There is absolutely no difference whether it occurs at the workplace, at home, or at school, workplace bullying is still in its basic form, bullying and as such, any type of bullying mentioned in this book, if it occurs at work, it is classed as “workplace bullying”. In dealing with it however, workplaces and the law define it in more “minimal terms”, that is, it has to be that it is a “risk to workplace health and safety”, this is very limiting, narrowing what is or is not classed as bullying, which the bullies of course, use to their advantage, being cautious to skirt around the “risk factors” so they can get away with much more “offensive” behaviour. I am about to prove to you that any workplace bullying is a health and safety risk.

Bullies in the workplace will usually pick on the new person because they are keen to learn and are quite gullible to the initial behaviours of the bully because they do not know any better for that particular workplace. These bullies use the same method of looking for weaknesses or differences that may make the victim feel “insecure” about themselves, however, they are much quicker at picking up on these flaws from their years of experience.
